100-amp vs 200-amp panel: which upgrade do you need?

Many older homes have 100 amp service or less. A 200-amp upgrade is common when adding an EV charger, central air or a heat pump.

Older homes in the Chicago area often have 60- or 100-amp service. That was adequate when homes had fewer electric loads. Today, EV chargers, central air, electric ranges and additions can push a small panel to its limit.

Why 200 amps is common

A 200-amp service gives more headroom for modern loads and future additions. It is not automatically right for every home, which is why we do a load calculation before recommending a size.

What an upgrade involves

Replacing the panel, grounding and bonding work as required, and in many cases changes to the service equipment. The utility may need to disconnect and reconnect power during the work, and power is typically off for part of the day.

Permits and inspection

Panel and service work usually needs a permit and an inspection. We coordinate the required steps once the scope is approved.

If you are not sure what size you have, send a photo of your panel with the quote form and we will tell you what we see.
